For the most part I think we all find the
folks at school to
be very accomodating when it comes to our diabetic children.
Once in
a while we find that one person, a crabby math teacher,
or an ornery gym teacher, who just doesn't want to make the
neccessary allowances for our children. If you ever run into one
of these oh so compassionate people, your child's rights
are protected by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973,
Section 504.
Basically this section says that the school personnel have to do
whatever it takes to take care of your child. If your child's
snack time doesn't coincide with whatever the teacher has set
aside, or unscheduled trips to the nurse because they feel low,
or whatever resistance you may run into, you have options.
Call
the principal and schedule a "504" meeting. There you can lay
out all the requirements for caring for your child. If you have
to call for one of these meetings, someone at the school has
likely tripped your enraged mother bear instincts. Leave that
rage at home. It will do more harm than good if you're venting
it at school personnel. They need to be educated not pounded.
