Back to Diabetes Nutrition Index Snack Tips for DiabeticsPublished:
6-July-2005 Probably the most important snack of the day is the bedtime snack. This is the snack that will take your child through the night when there is seldom anyone to watch for blood sugar fluctuations. If possible choose a snack with some fat and protein content as well as carbohydrates. The fat especially will take hours to digest giving your child a more level blood sugar rise during this critical time of day. Peanut butter, chocolate, or vanilla ice creams are suprisingly good choices. The sugar content is reasonable and the fat content is just what you are looking for. Other snacks including sugary cereals are fine as long as they are part of a healthy balanced diet. If you ever have any questions or doubts about snacks for your child, always check with your diabetes care team and/or your dietitian.
